About page

I’m Matt Blake, and this is my personal blog. I live in Newcastle, Australia and run a Christian mission organisation called Liberty People together with my parents, who started the work in 1991, and my brother Jon. Alongside our many friends and partners, we bring God’s love into the lives of needy communities around the world by sharing the good news of Jesus in both ‘word and deed’.

Why ‘The Upward Drop’?

Life with Jesus is a strange thing. The only way up is down. As much as popular Christianity would have us believe that God’s deepest concern is for the comfort and happiness of the already-rich, Jesus’ message is starkly different. God longs for his love to be made known to all, and that is often expressed through self-sacrificial love. Jesus expressed this in a way that will never be matched — on the cross. It’s not our job to repeat the work of the cross; it was final and victorious. But it is the work of all believers to humble ourselves and live in service of God and others. In the process of ‘lowering’ ourselves and lifting him up, we become more like Jesus. This is our free-falling, heavenward trajectory – our upward drop!

I won’t pretend that life on Jesus’ terms is easy or claim that I’ve mastered it (or even come close!) But this blog is a journal of my own journey toward a (hopefully) more Christ-like life, wherever that leads. If you want to join me, I’d love to walk with you.

My Promise

The Upward Drop will be an occasional blog. In fact, I promise to only blog when I have something valuable to say, which might sometimes mean gaps of weeks or months. The airwaves of the internet are busy enough as it is, and I don’t intend to add to the noise by churning out posts just for clicks and likes.
